Stun Guns: Do They Work Effectively As a Defense Tool?

stun gun

A stun gun, also known as an electric weapon (or taser), emits an electric current via two probes which deliver an incapacitating shock which causes momentary muscle weakness or loss of balance. It is not lethal, and can only be used in self-defense where a high degree of probability of bodily harm has been presented.

There are two types of stun gun devices: tasers and zappers. Taser devices usually feature a lower voltage and the device has a much shorter "action" range than do the zappers. Some devices have firing capabilities, but they are rare.

Stun Gun- Are They Effective?

The stun gun does not work as well when wearing clothing. A layer of clothing reduces its effectiveness. Although direct skin contact is the best way to transfer energy, in a defensive situation, you have to make do with what you have.

It is often better to use a stun gun in this situation than nothing at all when a direct shot to the bean bag (or meat wallet) is impossible. There are some products which have pronounced electrodes to deliver more power while wearing heavy clothing. Some disguise themselves as flashlights to deliver more power.

Best Place To Use Stun Guns

What is the best place to use your gun? Almost anywhere. Things usually go bad really fast when they go bad.

It is preferable to hit a larger muscle group rather than an extremity with a stun gun as it causes violent, uncontrolled muscle contractions. Effective points of contact are the chest, upper shoulders, back, stomach and thighs. It is also painful to strike the face and neck.

Stuns: They Begin Working Very Quickly

Upon contact with an attacker, a stun gun works immediately. Leaving the victim with plenty of time to escape, the electric shock is powerful enough to immediately subdue an assailant.

Additionally, the assailant will only receive a shock from these weapons, even though they have a hold on you. During an assault, the attacker's clothes conduct electric shocks which are absorbed by his body.

Despite being non-lethal, the device does not cause significant damage or permanent damage (though the attacker may begin to wonder if they sustained a major injury due to the amount of pain they experience). Self-defense experts have found that stun guns have a disorienting and debilitating effect.

Safeties Require For Stun Guns

Stun gun safety is restricted by law. These guns cannot be sold to minors, and there are several rules that must be followed. These devices must have certain features in order to meet state and federal laws. For example, the device must have a safety switch which must be pressed before the trigger can be pulled.

Stun gun devices come in various colors including black, chrome, blue, pink and more. Many people purchase these devices as a self-defense product because they are easy to use and can immobilize an attacker for at least 20 minutes without causing any permanent damage or injury.

Why Are Stun Guns Needed?

The use of a stun gun for self-defense is legal in most states. This includes use within the home and on school campuses, as long as it is being used in self-defense. Many people are opting to carry these guns with them because they are small, easily concealable and capable of delivering a strong jolt to an attacker or would-be attacker.

Many people choose to purchase their devices online or at a local retailer such as a Wal-Mart or sporting goods store. You can find many different makes and models on the market today, including pink tiger stun guns, pink rhinestone stuns, leather guns, pink bodyguard guns and many others.
